Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative donates more than $28,000 to 13 Valley organizations in this round of giving

ROCKINGHAM, March 5 — Operation Round Up, SVEC’s charitable giving program, covered many core needs in the area in its first round of giving for the year. Thirteen organizations recently received funds totaling more than $28,000.

A grant selection committee of co-op members and one employee chose the recipients, as described below. Funding comes from a corporate contribution from SVEC and voluntary efforts of co-op members who round up their bill to the nearest dollar each month. To date, more than 6,000 members participate in the program.

Recent Grant Recipients

Augusta County

Friends of the Middle River: to purchase educational items for meaningful watershed experiences for elementary through high school students in Staunton and Augusta County.

Rockingham-Augusta Search and Rescue: for the procurement of supplies and equipment to build emergency response kits to respond to searches and provide a partial stipend when new members join to begin building a response bag.

Verona Community Center: to support critical services it provides to the community, including access to laundry, showers and computers.

Frederick County/Winchester

First Presbyterian Church: for its Helper Fund that provides emergency assistance to area residents.

Literacy Volunteers: to purchase family literacy program materials for students.

Love to NIC: to provide a free monthly meal for those who are homeless in Winchester.

Page County

Community Works: for its Soup to Seniors program, with a goal of preparing 27 quarts of soup each month providing healthy, easy-to-reheat soup meals for 24 seniors in the community.

Rockingham County

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham: to support the enrollment and matching of additional youth throughout its service area.

Elkton Area United Services: to assist clients with paying their electric bill during times that they need a hand up.

People Helping People: to provide utility assistance to its clients.

Singers Glen Volunteer Rescue Squad: to purchase items that will assist in recruitment and community outreach events for the all-volunteer unit.

Shenandoah County

Emmanuel Episcopal Church: to make local food purchases and directly address the challenges of food insecurity and limited access to nutritious options for the surrounding communities.

Shenandoah Valley Local Ministries: for A Small Hand, to purchase a month’s supply of diapers for 60 babies, and Luke’s Backpack, to purchase food for weekend food bags for 125 schoolchildren.
