Community Works Together in Page County, river clean up planned April 27

Despite political bickering on the national level, a team of local volunteers is working on non-partisan issues of community concern in Page County. “Community Works” is a growing team that partners with other volunteers, and local civic, church, and nonprofit organizations to strengthen our community and restore neighborliness, regardless of political differences.

Initiated by the Rural Urban Bridge Initiative and partnering with the Page County Democrats, Community Work’s volunteers now span the political spectrum — including Republicans, Independents, and people disengaged with politics — to tackle local needs and bring people together.

Examples over recent months include:

  • Developing and teaching art classes with youth at the West Luray Rec Center.
  • Sponsoring a successful food and supply drive for “The REC”.
  • Keeping local families warm this winter, by raising over $3,200 for the Page One home heating assistance program.
  • Preparing for and supporting the “Wesley’s Night before Christmas” event for local kids.
  • Helping a local church rehabilitate a home in Stanley, for a grandmother and her grandkids, after a fire displaced them from their home.
  • Volunteering with local groups like the Page One Food Pantry.

Reach out with volunteer needs, and we will work to send over a few helping hands.

Now Community Works is partnering with The Friends of the Shenandoah River, the only nonprofit that regularly and accurately tests the South Fork for harmful E Coli bacteria. Testing is essential to protect health — the river’s health, public health and the health of our tourist economy.

Nicknamed a “Friends-Raiser,” this effort seeks to enable the Friends to test more river sites in Page County, to the benefit of local residents, local businesses, and tourists alike. We are planning a river clean-up on April 27, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alma boat landing along with a demonstration of water quality testing by the Friends’ highly-qualified technician and a river safety demonstration with the Shenandoah Riverkeeper.

As the Local Coordinator for Community Works, I’d be glad to hear from others interested in coordinating with neighbors on local issues of common concern. To quote our Facebook page, CommunityWorks4Page, “Community Works best, together.”
