Cow rescued from icy pond

Ice on lake

February 5, 1987 — Members of the Luray Fire Department and other volunteers worked to free a female Hereford which fell into any icy pond off Cave Hill Road Monday morning.

Ralph Davis, the owner of the cow, said Tuesday that Jim Logan of Luray Caverns Airport drove past the pond around 10:30 a.m. and noticed that the cow had fallen through.

Davis estimated that the cow was in the icy waters for more than an hour before it was pulled out. Luray veterinarian Eugene Martin gave the cow some shots and the prognosis for recovery is good.
