D.C. budget dilemma closes national park campgrounds

October 11, 1990 — Campgrounds at Shenandoah National Park were closed as of noon Monday and employees manning the sites were sent home, according to Chief Park Ranger Larry Hakel.

The cause, the federal budget wrangle in Congress, which failed to pass a funding bill in time for the start of the new fiscal year Oct. 1.

However, Tuesday President George Bush signed a continuing resolution for funding, sending federal employees back to work until Oct. 19.

“Shenandoah National Park is fully back in operation,” said Sandy Rives, management assistant for the park.
