People smiled when they thought of Dolores Jeanette Wilt Painter because they knew how deeply she cared for them. She was one of the kindest people anyone could hope to meet, a woman with a warm smile, a gentle spirit, quiet elegance, and a remarkable ability to make others feel genuinely loved.

Dolores Jeanette Wilt Painter, 81, of Stanley, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026.

Dolores was born on December 12, 1944, in Stanley, Virginia, to Carlton and Beatrice Wilt. She grew up in Stanley and remained deeply connected to the community throughout her life, making it her lifelong home.

On January 24, 1964, Dolores married Jennings Painter. Together they raised their two children, Monica and Kevin. Dolores was a devoted wife and an extraordinary mother whose children always knew they could count on her unwavering love, encouragement, and support. Family was at the center of her life, and she found her greatest happiness in caring for the people she loved.

Dolores enjoyed a successful career with the United States Department of Agriculture. She began in the Page County office, was later promoted to the Warren County office, and spent the majority of her career in Washington, D.C. She was respected by her colleagues and especially loved by the farmers she served. Her patience, professionalism, and sincere desire to help others earned their trust and created friendships that lasted well beyond her years of service.

Dolores was a longtime member of Leake’s Chapel Church. Her faith was quiet but steadfast, reflected not only in what she believed but in the way she lived each day. She loved her family, treasured her friends, and was deeply proud of her country. A true patriot, she believed in treating people with kindness, offering help without hesitation, and showing respect to everyone she met.

Dolores also possessed a quiet elegance. She was never flashy, but she was always beautifully put together and carried herself with grace, dignity, and quiet confidence. She took equal pride in her home, where everything had its place. Her family often joked about her determination to keep the house spotless, but they also understood that the care she gave her home was another expression of the love she gave her family.

Sports were one of Dolores’s great passions. She played softball competitively well into her fifties and was known as a fast and talented outfielder. She also loved baseball, especially the University of Virginia Cavaliers. One of her most treasured experiences was traveling with Monica to Omaha, Nebraska, in 2015 and watching the Cavaliers win the College World Series.

Dolores loved Christmas and everything that came with it. She took great joy in decorating her home, preparing holiday meals, and gathering her family around the table. Crab, oysters, shrimp, and her many homemade dishes became cherished family traditions. She was an excellent cook, and her special chicken salad, along with many other recipes, will continue to be prepared and remembered with love.

Dolores had a special love for animals and affectionately called all of her pets “her babies.” They were cherished members of her family and brought her tremendous happiness and companionship.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton and Beatrice Wilt; her sisters, Patsy Buracker and Shirley Weakley; and an infant sister.

She is survived by her husband, Jennings Painter; her daughter, Monica Painter; her son, Kevin Painter, and his wife, Teresa; and her beloved step-grandchildren, Josh Buynar and Brooke Buynar.

More than anything, Dolores will be remembered for the way she made people feel. She lived without seeking attention or recognition and instead quietly encouraged, supported, and loved those around her.

The love, generosity, and devotion Dolores gave so freely throughout her life were returned to her in abundance by those who cherished her. Her family will forever be grateful for the example she set through a life marked by kindness, humility, grace, and unconditional love.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Leake’s Chapel Church in Stanley, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Leake’s Chapel Church, with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
