Ernst, Hilliard earn Region 1B Player of the Year honors

Bulldogs earn 16 all-region selections across three sports

LURAY — Luray High School senior Connor Hilliard and junior Michael Ernst lead a list of 15 Bulldogs who earned 16 slots on all-region teams over the last week. Hilliard, who will play for Division I JMU next season, was named the Region 1B Player of the Year in baseball; while Ernst earned the same title in boys soccer.

In addition to being selected as Player of the Year, Hilliard was named a first team all-region pitcher, while also earning second team honors as a shortstop. The Bulldogs had a total of five first team selections on the all-region squad, including:

  • Landon Wood — senior, 1B
  • Cole Hilliard — sophomore, 3B
  • Nick Cubbage — senior, OF
  • Caleb Cyphert — sophomore, OF

The Bulldogs ended the season at 11-11 on Tuesday with a 5-0 loss at Rappahannock High School in Warsaw, Va. during the VHSL Class 1 state quarterfinals. Luray finished as the Region 1B runner-up after dropping the title game to Riverheads. Their coach, Rodney Painter was named Region 1B Coach of the Year.

Ernst was named a first all-region forward in boys soccer. Luray had a total of three first team selections and four second team selections on the all-region squad, including:

  • Maximus Banks — sophomore, midfielder, first team
  • Marlow Lopez-Amador — senior, defense, first team
  • Logan Fox — senior, forward, second team
  • Jose Hernandez — sophomore, midfield, second team
  • Landon Good — junior, midfielder, second team
  • Tristian Wilson — junior, defense, second team

Luray’s boys soccer team ended the season at 6-13-1 after a loss in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finished as the Region 1B runner-up after a loss to Altavista. Their coach, David Sage, was named the Region 1B Coach of the Year.

The Luray softball team placed three honorees on the all-region squad, including:

  • Madison Eavey — sophomore, pitcher, second team
  • Carleigh Good — freshman, OF, second team
  • Kelsi Caputo — senior, DP, second team

The LHS softball team ended the season at 9-11 in a regional semifinal loss to Buffalo Gap, 5-2 — one win away from the state tournament. Altavista senior Breanna Crozier was named Player of the Year for Region 1B, while Buffalo Gap’s Holly Desper was Coach of the Year.
