Fire at new LES

Luray museum

June 8, 1961 — The Luray Fire Department was called to the new Luray Elementary School building Thursday afternoon of last week when a fire was discovered in a wall on the west side.

Firemen had to tear out a brick panel between two windows in order to subdue the blaze which started near the floor level and burned out the insulation all the way to the eaves of the building.

Just what caused the fire has not been determined. However, it is said that workmen had made some repairs earlier that day in the area where the fire occurred.

The new school building is nearing completion and will be ready for the 1961-62 session.

Damage was covered by insurance.
