July 18, 1991 — Barbara Smelser, Page County’s first female appointee to the school board, feels her role as a mother and grandmother will enable her to do the job better.
“It’s a big responsibility, but I feel like I’m up to it,” Mrs. Smelser said Thursday at the family-owned business, the Page Valley Shopping Center, which she helps to operate.
Mrs. Smelser recently was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Jimmie Seekford, another grocery store owner whose business is a stone’s throw from the Smelser’s.
