Guiding eyes

March 17, 1989 — Page County 4-H’ers have undertaken a project to help those who cannot see. The 4-H Guide Dog project was implemented in the county in April 1987 by Paula Doden, a member of the Blue and Gray Search and Rescue Team, according to Cheryl Linaburg, current project leader.

Four dogs were sent to the county in 1987 from the GuidingEyes for the Blind School in New York to be socialized — or to receive basic training, Mrs. Linaburg said. Dogs are bred at the school for the sole purpose of becoming Guiding Eye Dogs.

Since 1987, four more Labrador Retrievers have set up temporary residence in Page County for a brief one-year period in the hope that they may one day be able to lead the blind.
