Afternoon high temps almost 10 degrees above average; 43-degree change between high and low on March 12
The most unusual weather event of the month goes to the temperature range occurring on March 12. The high for the day was 76 degrees (at midnight) and a low of 33 degrees — a 43-degree temperature difference. Snow totaling 0.25 inch was recorded between 10:30 am to noon.
High temperatures for March climbed into the 80s on five days, the 70s on nine days, the 60s on six days, the 50s on eight days, the 40s on one day and in the 30s on two days during the month. The high for the month was 85 degrees on March 22.
The coldest March was in 2013, where the average afternoon high was only 46.2 degrees. The warmest March on record was in 2012, where the average afternoon high was 66.4 degrees.
The average daily low temperature for the month was 40.6 degrees, or 5.9 degrees above the average low of 34.7 degrees. Low temperatures for the month were down into the 20s on six days, the 30s on nine days, the 40s on eight days, the 50s on six days, and in the 60s on two days during the month. The low for the month was 20 degrees on March 18.
There were two measurable snows during the month totaling 1 inch. Average total snow for March is 4.1 inches. During the past 58 winters, the snowiest March was in 2013 with 23 inches of snow. Other snowy Marches include 20.5 inches in 1999 and 20.6 inches in 1994.
Total rainfall for the month was 2.54 inches, or 0.45 inch below the March average of 2.96 inches. The year-to-date rain total is now at 7.72 inches, or 0.44 inches below the average year-to-date total of 8.16 inches.
The wettest March on record was in 1994 with 9.53 inches of rain and snow melt. The driest occurred in 2006 with only 0.35 inches of rain recorded
