Second-wettest May in 57 years

May produces 21 days with rain; year-to-date rainfall now above average

STANLEY — Total rainfall for May was 8.47 inches, or 4.34 inches above the May average of 4.13 inches. The month provided 21 days with measurable rain. A typical May averages 13 days with rain. The 2025 year-to-date total is 17.15 inches, or 1.83 inches above average.

May 2025 was the second wettest in the past 57 years. The wettest May on record was 1989, with 8.55 inches of rain. The driest occurred during 1977, with only 0.90 inch of rain recorded.

Temperatures for May were near average. The mean temperature for the month was 63.8 degrees. The 57-year average mean temperature for May is 64.0 degrees.

The average afternoon high temperature for the month was 72.7 degrees, or 2.8 degrees below the average high of 75.5 degrees. High temperatures for May climbed into the 80s on six days, the 70s on 15 days, the 60s on eight days and the 50s on two days. The high for the month was 85 degrees on May 1.

The warmest May dates back to 1977, with an average high temperature of 83.0 degrees. The coolest May on record was in 2020, with an average high temperature of only 69.5 degrees.

The average daily low temperature for May was 54.9 degrees, or 2.4 degrees above the average low of 52.5 degrees. Low temperatures for the month were down into the 40s on five days, the 50s on 18 days and the 60s on eight days during the month. The low for the month was 43 degrees on May 10.

The peak wind gust for the month was 37 mph during a thunderstorm on May 30.

One record was broken during May 2025:

• May 13 — single day rain, 3.36 inches; previous record of 1.48 inches in 1978.
