Valley Health Cancer Center celebrates a decade of service

WINCHESTER, Aug. 27 – [Last month], Valley Health Cancer Center celebrated 10 years of serving the community with coordinated, comprehensive and compassionate cancer care.
More than a decade ago, Valley Health Foundations began a capital campaign to raise funds for a Cancer Center for the community. The campaign exceeded its $10 million goal, and thanks to the generous support of the community, the Cancer Center became a reality on the Winchester Medical Center campus in 2016.
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, these community donors were celebrated for their generosity, and the center was recognized for treating more than 1,300 newly diagnosed patients each year.
“Ten years ago, our community came together to invest in hope, healing and health by building a Cancer Center close to home,” said Jenny Grooms, executive director of Valley Health Foundations. “Today, we celebrate not only a decade of exceptional care, but exceptional generosity. Every dollar given to the Cancer Center has eased a patient’s burden, kept its lights on, created comfort, advanced care, and supported caregivers. This incredible generosity will continue to save and improve lives every day and inspire hope for years to come.”
The Cancer Center is a multidisciplinary team of physicians that specialize in surgical oncology, complex general surgical oncology, breast oncology, colorectal surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic oncology, endocrine surgery, urologic surgery, gynecologic oncology, plastic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. In addition, team members from Nutrition Services, Social Work Services, Wellspring, Integrative Care, and the Wellness Center help in patient care.
“We offer the full scope of cancer care close to home for patients in the Shenandoah Valley,” says Devin Flaherty, DO, medical director of Valley Health Surgical Oncology. “Our collaborative multidisciplinary group of clinicians work together daily to streamline and coordinate care, thereby providing the best treatment possible to our patients. The Cancer Center is successful because of investment in recruiting highly trained specialists and sub-specialists. Having the Cancer Center has also helped greatly to consolidate resources under one roof.”
The comprehensive community cancer program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Rectal Cancer Program has been accredited since 2020 by the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, and the Breast Center has been accredited since 2009 by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

The Cancer Center treats more than 1,300 newly diagnosed patients each year. When it opened in 2015, the Cancer Center saw 1,233 cases. In 2025, that number was 2,054 cases.
This year, physicians will tell:
- 340 people they have lung cancer;
- 338 women they have breast cancer;
- 335 people they have colorectal cancer;
- 190 men they have prostate cancer.
