September 16, 1965Three prisoners in Rockingham County jail in Harrisonburg failed in their attempt to dig their way to freedom Monday night.

They were discovered by jailers after they had removed only three bricks from the wall of their cell in the rear of the building.

Officers said the prisoners would have had to dig through three layers of brick to gain freedom.

One of the trio was listed as a 21-year-old of Stanley, who is facing charges from the theft of copper pipe from a Montevideo High School construction project.

The other two were a 18-year-old of Elton, Md., charged with auto theft; and a 19-year-old of Grottoes, serving 90 days for fleeing an officer and is facing a charge of parole violation.
