John Howard ‘Duffy’ Smith

Age 92, Luray, Va.

John Howard “Duffy” Smith, age 92, of Luray, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

Born on February 13, 1934, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late John Andrew Smith and Goldie Mosby Smith Fields, and the stepson of the late Richard Fields, Sr.

John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years of honorable service. Following his military career, he remained active in his community and was a devoted member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. He was also a proud member of Harrisonburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 632 and American Legion Shenandoah Valley Post No. 188.

On December 27, 1964, John married the love of his life, Audrey Tutt Smith, who survives.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his brother, Richard Fields, Jr., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Fields Tutt.

A private interment will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Rec Center, P.O. Box 603, Luray, VA 22835.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Blue Ridge Hospice, Veterans Affairs Primary Care Health Team in Harrisonburg, Bradley Funeral Home, his devoted in-home caregiver, Katherine Montcalm, and the many family members who lovingly assisted in his care. Their compassion, kindness, and support during his final days will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
