July almost became wettest on record

With 8.05 inches of rain, July 2025 finished just below record set in 1970; year-to-date rainfall nearly 7 inches above average

STANLEY — July 2025 will go down as the second-wettest July in the past 57 years, with 8.05 inches of rain recorded. If this July would have lasted only five hours longer, we could add an additional 1.19 inches of rain that fell during the early morning hours of August 1. Quoting a famous catchphrase from the 1960s TV show Get Smart, we “missed it by that much.” With that being said, July 1970 still holds the record with 8.44 inches of rain.

July 2025 was certainly the stormiest in the past 57 years, with 13 thunderstorms. The previous record was 12 during July 1980. The July average is six thunderstorms.

The total rainfall for the month was 8.05 inches, or 3.85 inches above the July average of 4.2 inches. The calendar year-to-date rainfall total is 30.53 inches, or 6.97 inches above average.

The driest July dates back to 1983, with only 0.61 inches of rain recorded. The wettest July was 1970 with 8.44 inches of rain.

Temperatures for the month of July were above average. The mean temperature for the month was 78.3 degrees. The 57-year average mean temperature for July is 76 degrees. The average afternoon high temperature for the month was 88.1 degrees, or 0.9 degree above the average high temperature of 87.2 degrees. High temperatures for July climbed into the 90s on 11 days and in the 80s on 20 days during the month. The high for the month was 93 degrees on July 25 and July 26.

The average daily low temperature for the month was 68.4 degrees, or 3.6 degrees above the average low temperature of 67.8 degrees. Low temperatures for the month were down into the 60s on 16 days and in the 70s on 15 days during the month. The low for the month was 63 degrees on July 6.

The warmest July on record was in 1999, where the average afternoon high was 92.1 degrees and with 26 days reaching the 90-degree mark or higher. The coolest July was in 2000 (one year later), where the average afternoon high was only 81.2 degrees and with only two days above the 90-degree mark.

The peak wind gust for the month was 36 mph during a thunderstorm on July 16.

Records broken during July 2025:

• July 1 — single day rain of 1.32 inches; previous record of 0.70 inch in 1981.
• July 13 — single day rain of 2.13 inches; previous record of 1.71 inch in 2010.
