Mexican restaurant gets rave reviews since opening downtown in May

LURAY, Aug. 25 — Filling Downtown Luray with a festive sound, the seven members of Mariachi Rey Aztec lined the sidewalk along Main Street and set the tone for Tuesday evening’s grand opening of Luray’s newest Mexican restaurant, Los Potrillos.
Despite opening to customers this spring, the local eatery on the corner of Broad and Main officially held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, hosted by the Luray Downtown Initiative (LDI).
“On behalf of LDI, we are so blessed to have you in our downtown,” said LDI Program Director Jackie Wood. “I have heard nothing but great compliments about the food, about the service, and the atmosphere. Thank you so much for choosing Luray and opening this beautiful restaurant.”
The family-owned Mexican restaurant has four locations under the name of Los Potrillos, including on in Front Royal. However, they also own 18 other locations, under different names, spread out across Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio. The family is originally from Mexico in the “state” of Jalisco and the town of Degollado, an area known for its tequilla. They opened their first restaurant in the 1980s.
“This place is wonderful,” Manager Aaron Chaparro said of Luray. “We didn’t expect to be this busy, like we are right now. We’ve been really surprised at how busy we are…”
Chaparro invited the musical group Mariachi Rey Aztec to provide traditional Mexican music for customers on Tuesday evening. The talented group also played adapted regional favorites, like John Denver’s “Country Roads”, which was captured on video and shared on Facebook.
Chaparro said that other than a few new tables and other minor things, Los Potrillos basically had no renovations to deal with when they took over the space formally occupied by Watch & Warrant. The up-scale dining location closed about two years after opening in 2023. Chaparro also noted that local officials have been great to work with as they were getting settled in their new Luray location.
“It was actually pretty good,” he said on Tuesday. “It was pretty fast. We really didn’t have a hard time.”
Los Potrillos employs about 15 staff members and provides meals ranging from $10 to $20. They offer many traditional Mexican dishes and a full bar.
“We’ve got a wonderful atmosphere…wonderful food,” Chaparro said. “We have margaritas and a cool bar here, and we stay open late…everything seems to close early here.”
Los Potrillos, 2 E. Main St. in Downtown Luray, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
