Luray police officer commits suicide prior to state police raid

Accident report

LURAY, Nov. 3 — Authorities are not yet releasing information about the nature of an investigation that lead state police to a residence on North Court Street in Luray on Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, investigators making the morning raid found that an officer of the Luray Police Department — the subject of the investigation — had taken his own life.

“On November 2, 2026, the Luray Police Department became aware of serious allegations involving a member of our department,” reads a statement issued by the LPD midday Tuesday. “The matter was immediately turned over to the Virginia State Police, who are handling the investigation.”

“As previously reported by Virginia State Police, the department member died by suicide on the morning of November 3, 2026, while state police were attempting to execute search warrants at a residence in the Town of Luray,” the LPD’s statement continues. “We are cooperating fully with Virginia State Police and will continue to assist them as needed.”

Although the identity has been confirmed by outside sources, PVN will withhold the name of the deceased at this time. State police were executing warrants issued by the court when they entered the North Court Street residence.

“We understand this situation is concerning to our community, and we know people will have questions. We take these matters seriously and want to assure our community that the investigation is being handled by an outside agency,” the department stated in a letter signed by Luray Police Chief Lonnie W. Foster Jr. “Our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected by this tragedy. We ask for everyone’s patience and respect for those involved while the investigation continues.”

The police department directed all further inquiries to the state police, who is still handling the investigation.
