August 6, 1987 — “The bells have been ringing for 50 years.”
Former U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. keynoted a special commemorative ceremony at the Luray Singing Tower Saturday with praise for the 47-bell memorial to Belle Brown Northcott and the family which conceived and supported it.
“It’s a great day for Luray and the people of this community,” he said to a crowd of some 60 persons gathered at the base of the 113-foot stone structure.
The tower was dedicated in 1937 as a gift to the town from Col. T.C. Northcott and his daughter, Katherine Northcott Graves, in memory of Northcott’s wife.
