Mailbox vandals

Old country road

October 13, 1964 — The theft and destruction of an estimated 20 mailboxes in the Shenandoah area was in progress Tuesday. Page County Sheriff Clark Long said that deputies and post office inspectors were conducting the investigation and that it was hoped to make some arrests in a few days.

Light mailboxes were broken from their supports on U.S.340 near the town limits and left lying on the roadside; a number of the mailboxes were stolen on Ninth Street in Shenandoah and a number found in the Shenandoah River where they had evidently been thrown by the yeggs.

Police said yesterday that molds had been made of footprints and that fingerprints were being identified. A suspicious license number is also under investigation.

The mailbox episode was not all the mischief attributed to Monday night prowlers. Mrs. Alice Wolfersberger, principal at the Grove Hill School, reported that a number of window panes in the school were shot out. Investigation is proceeding.
