May 22, 1986 — A 30-year-old man, who accidentally started the largest fire in the history of the Shenandoah National Park, has been charged with lighting a camp stove that burned out of control.
The Craddockville man was officially charged Tuesday and was to receive a summons Wednesday, according to Chief Ranger Larry Hakel.
The man and his wife were camping in a wilderness area of the Park east of Port Republic May 2, when a burning piece of toilet paper, which was used to light a camp stove, blew into the woods.
