~ Athlete of the Week selected by the publisher
STRASBURG, May 17 — Luray High School’s Jaidyn McClung makes a return trip to the “Athlete of the Week” spotlight after dominating four separate events at the Bull Run District Track Championships held last week at Strasburg.
There are several local track athletes that stand out…Luray’s Davey Johnson is well known as a strong distance runner, Page’s Jacob Martz is a great jumper — both district champions in the 1600 meter run and high jump, respectively. And then there’s speedsters like Luray’s Drayvin Stevens that finished runner-up in three events, and Page’s Stephon Hawkins…along with hurlers like Page County’s Elizabeth Ramos and Landry Burns.
However, there are few (if any) local track athletes as diverse and multi-talented as McClung. The senior recently signed with Bridgwater College to play volleyball in the Division III Old Dominion Athletic Conference this fall, but her performance at the Bull Run Track Championships brought home a district title in the 100 meter hurdles and district runner-up status in the 300 meter hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump. Her results show a combination of speed, strength and agility.
McClung has only been competing in track the last two seasons, after committing four years to both volleyball and basketball in which she appeared in four state title games. She has earned All-State honors in all three sports.
The Region B Track Championships get underway at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at East Rockingham High School in McGaheysville.
