July 16, 1908 — Sharpers in several localities in this section are working a new note swindle. Most people object to giving a note and having it discounted for cash. This was the case the other day. The agent said he was satisfied to hold it and to prove his assertion wrote “not trasnferable” upon the face. A few days later the farmer found the note had been discounted at the bank he dealt with, and instead of the words “not transferable,” an “e” had been added to the word “not” making it read “note transferable.”
