March 7, 1986 — Page County withstood a late surge by Rockbridge Saturday night and captured the Group A state volleyball championship.

The home-standing Panthers whipped the Rebels 15-4 in the first game, than sweated out a 15-13 decision in the clincher.

“They (Rockbridge) played much better in the second game,” Page coach Alan Knight said. “I don’t think we were overconfident — we took care of that in the huddle between games.”

The win gave the Panthers the Virginia High School League’s first Group A state volleyball championship.

In previous years Group A volleyball competition ended at the regional level.
