New weekly YouTube show dives into various issues in the Page Valley, while also reporting the Week in Review and checking out the Weekend Ahead
By Randy Arrington
LURAY, Nov. 29 — This week “Page Valley Livin'” visits with Leon Stout, treasurer of the Town of Stanley and event coordinator for this weekend’s “Christmas in Stanley.” We’ll talk about the annual Christmas parade, as well as events planned afterwards at Ed Good Memorial Park.
With the temperature below 30 degrees and high winds in the area when we recorded on Tuesday, Nov. 28, our interview planned for Ed Good Memorial Park was pushed indoors to the William “Bill” Kibler Memorial Library on Main Street in Stanley. Slightly warmer weather is forecast for Saturday.
The Town of Stanley typically kicks off the holiday season in the Page Valley by hosting the first Christmas parade — followed by Luray’s Christmas parade. The Luray-Page County Chamber of Commerce will actually be first on the holiday scene with their “Holiday Festival” at the Visitors Center in Downtown Luray from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1 with The Town of Luray lighting its Christmas Tree at 7 p.m. The Town of Shenandoah will light their Town Tree at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 in Big Gem Park.
Hundreds are expected to line Main Street long before the 6 p.m. start of Stanley’s Christmas parade on Saturday, Dec. 2. Temperatures are likely to dip into the 40s, so bring a blanket. In our interview, Stout shares news about this year’s parade grand marshal, the number of entries, who will be judging entries, what prizes are available, and what to expect in the lineup.
In recent years, Stanley has added post-parade holiday events down at Ed Good Memorial Park to help spark that holiday feeling and create a sense of community through “Christmas in Stanley.” Again, Stout will shed some light on what to expect at the park, who you can get your photo with, and what may be roasting around an open fire. The Town of Stanley will light its Town Tree Saturday evening.
The Stanley treasurer also agrees to play “The5Ws” with us, as we quiz him on a holiday version of Who, What, When, Where and Why. We discuss his favorite Christmas movie, when he started decorating for Christmas, and why it’s important to carry on holiday traditions in small towns.
As always, we’ll look at “the week that was” in the Page Valley with a review of news headlines and sports, and we’ll tell you about some upcoming events to look out for.
(Page Valley Livin’ ~ Episode 6 was recorded on Tuesday, Nov. 28 and first aired Wednesday, Nov. 29).
Coming up on Page Valley Livin’… next Wednesday we will be entering the depths of Luray Caverns to talk with Dennis Fleming and Katie McDaniel about the upcoming Saturday, Dec. 9 event “Caroling in the Caverns,” which is being hosted by the Caverns Shrine Club from 6 to 8 p.m. to raise money for Shriners Hospital for Children.
The aim and purpose of these videos is to provide more information about more things that make up the wonderful place we call the Page Valley of Virginia. Serious issues will be handled seriously, while lighter issues may offer more opportunity to have some fun. There is no theme or agenda other than promoting the Page Valley, and trying to better inform the people who both live here and those who love to visit.
