Panthers pick up 10-4 district win over Clarke behind Lucas home run

BERRYVILLE, May 8 — The Page County Panthers picked up a timely 10-4 win in the Bull Run District on the road Monday at Clarke. Junior Noah Lucas belted a home run and lead the Panthers at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance that produced three runs scored and two RBI.

The win kept the Panthers in a three-way tie for sixth place in the district with three games remaining in the regular season. Senior Hayden Plum scored a run and went 2-for-4 on the day, while senior Adam Short went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Junior Jordan Foster only got one hit out of five trips to the plate, but his double scored two runs.

Both the Panthers and the Eagles belted nine hits on the day. Page left nine runners on base, while Clarke stranded 10. The visitors only committed one error, while the Eagles had five.

PCHS sophomore Tyler Shifflett picked up the win on the mound after 6.1 innings of work, with eight strikeouts and only two walks.

In Monday’s district matchup, both the Panthers and the Eagles put up three runs in the first. Page added a run in third, followed by a Clarke run in the fourth. The Panthers broke the 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth with another run and broke the game open with another five runs in the top of the seventh.

Clarke was lead by sophomore Wilson Taylor, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Caden Fowler went 2-for-3, while freshman Camden McCarty went 1-for-3 and knocked in two runs.

With the loss, Clarke drops to 5-8 in the Bull Run — tied with Page and Strasburg. Luray is just ahead in fifth place at 6-7, while Rappahannock and Mt. View are tied for third at 7-7 in district play. Six of the top eight teams in the district are only separated by two games. East Rockingham and Madison sit atop the Bull Run at 11-2 in district play.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-11 overall and break a string of six consecutive losses. Next up, Page hosts Central on Friday at 6 p.m. Two regular season games remain next week with Page traveling to Strasburg on Tuesday and hosting East Rock on Friday.
