CHARLOTTESVILLE —The Virginia High School League announced its 2025 Class 2 all-state softball team earlier this month. Central (Woodstock) junior shortstop Vanessa Gordon was named the Class 2 Player of the Year, and Central (Woodstock) head coach Timmy Wakeman was the Class 2 Coach of the Year.

The Page County Panthers, under the leadership of Hall of Fame Coach Alan Knight, placed two players on the 2025 All-State squad. Senior catcher Emma Lucas earned first team honors, while sophomore outfielder Ava Marshall was a second team selection.

Page County ended its 2025 season at 20-5 following a loss to King William in the Class 2 state quarterfinals. The Panthers won the Bull Run District regular season championship, and were the Region 2B runners-up. Coach Knight took a young team that lost seven players from the previous year and went on a 17-game winning streak at one point in the season.

The all-state softball team consists of three pitchers, one catcher, four infielders by position, three outfielders, and one DP.  Only those players selected as first-team all-region players are eligible for selection to the all-state team. The all-state selection committee comprises eight coaches, with two from each region.

CORRECTION

In June, PVN incorrectly stated that nine local athletes earned all-state status at the VHSL Class 2 Outdoor Championships at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on June 6-7.

Ten finishes in the Top 10 at state track meet

However, the actual number was three — Page County’s Braxton Pettit was the state runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles; Luray’s Azmani Jackson earned third place in the 400 meter dash; and Luray senior and Shippensburg University-commit Davey Johnson earned third place in the 800 meter run.

Track and field athletes must finish among the top three at state in order to earn all-state honors.
