Two region titles, 11 finishes among Top 5

Ten local athletes qualify for state track and field championships June 6-7

ELKTON, May 28 — Local track and field athletes brought home two region titles, three runner-ups and posted a total of 11 finishes among the Top 5 at the Region 2B Track and Field championships held at East Rockingham High School on Wednesday.

Page County’s Braxton Pettit did it again — after earning a Bull Run District title in the 110 meter hurdles (14.68 seconds) on May 21 at Strasburg, the sophomore won the Region 2B title (14.76 sec) in the same event on May 28. Pettit also qualified for the VHSL Class 2 state meet in the 100 meter dash, finishing in third place with a time of 11.41 seconds — a near repeat of his third-place performance at district the week before (11.5 sec). The Page sophomore finished seventh in the 300 meter hurdles at 43.75 seconds — nine-tenths of a second slower than his district runner-up finish at Strasburg (42.85).

Luray’s Azmani Jackson also repeated by winning a region title in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 51.65 — four-tenths of a second slower than his district winning time of 51.23 seconds. The sophomore finished eighth in the 200 meter dash (23.72 seconds), an event he placed third in at district (23.82).

Luray senior Davey Johnson posted the only region runner-up performance on the boys side, with a second place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:05.14. Johnson won the Bull Run title in the same event last week with a time of 10:09.43.

Page County senior Ace Campbell qualified for state in three different events, finishing third at region in the triple jump (40′-5.5″); fourth in the 400 meter dash (53.47 seconds); and sixth in the long jump (19′-5″). At districts last week, Campbell won the triple jump (38′-8″), while finishing third in the 400 meter dash (53.52 sec) and fourth in the long jump (19′-8″).

PCHS junior Asher Kite took third place in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:37.39.

Luray freshman Daniel Frey finished in sixth place in the 300 meter hurdles (42.89 seconds) and eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.67 sec).

Other top performances at the Region 2B meet in the boys division:

  • 7th — Wyatt Seal, LHS senior, 3200 meter run (11:09.5)
  • 7th — Isaac Davis, PCHS freshman, high jump (5′-6″)
  • 7th — Nate Holloway, PCHS sophomore, shot put (41′-9″)

In the girls division, Luray sophomores Isabela Rizek and Kristina McLain were region runner-ups in the 3200 meter run (13:00.31) and the 100 meter hurdles (17.59 seconds), respectively. McLain won a district title in the 100 meters last week (17.92).

Luray senior Annah Wood, who has committed to run for Bridgewater College next year, won third place in the 1600 meter run (5:47.29) and fourth place in the 800 meter run (2:33.28).

Page County senior Mady Murphy earned sixth place in the discuss with a distance of 97 feet, two inches.

Other top performances at the Region 2B meet in the girls division:

  • 7th — Zoe Vaughan, LHS freshman, 100 meter hurdles (19.67 seconds)
  • 7th — Lucy Currle, LHS junior, 300 meter hurdles (55.01 sec)
  • 8th — Maya Jenkins, LHS sophomore, 1600 meter run (6:06.3)
  • 9th — Makenzie Painter, PCHS senior, shot put (28′-3″)

The VHSL Class 2 Outdoor Track State Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, June 6-7 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
