Local track athletes bring home five district titles

Luray and Page post 26 finishes in the Top 5 at Bull Run championships

STRASBURG, May 21 — Local athletes earned five districts titles in track and field at the Bull Run District championships on Wednesday at Strasburg High School, while posting a total of 26 finishes among the Top 5 in their respective events. The Page County High School boys track and field team finished third as a group.

BOYS DIVISION

PCHS senior Ace Campbell lead the Panthers with a district title in the triple jump, with a distance of 38 feet, 8 inches coming out on top of a dozen finalists. Campbell finished among the Top 6 in three other events — third place in the 400 meter dash (:53.52), fourth place in the long jump (19′, 8″), and sixth place in the 200 meter dash (:24.56). The senior also finished in eighth place (among 23 finalists) in the 100 meter dash (11.96 seconds).

Sophomore Braxton Pettit earned a district title for Page County in the 110 meter hurdles, with a time of 14.68 seconds earning first place among 15 finalists. Pettit was a district runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles (42.85 seconds). The sophomore also earned third place in the 100 meter dash (11.5 seconds), and sixth place in both the long jump (19′,3″) and the triple jump (36′,10″).

Other top finishers for the Page County boys track and field team include:

  • 3rd — Nate Holloway, sophomore, shot put (43′,11″)
  • 5th — Isaac Davis, freshman, high jump (5′,2″)
  • 5th — Jaxon Staples, sophomore, 3200 meter run (11:33.62)
  • 7th — Asher Kite, junior, 1600 meter run (4:49.14)

Luray was lead by senior Davey Johnson, who earned a district title in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:09.43 among 10 finalists. Johnson also took third place in the 1600 meter run (4:35.59) among 18 runners in the finals.

Sophomore Azmani Jackson won the district title in the 400 meter dash, after taking first place with a time of 51.23 seconds among 17 finalists. Jackson also earned third place in the 200 meter dash (:23.82).

Other top finishers for the Bulldogs include freshman Daniel Frey, who earned third place in the 300 meter hurdles (43.4 seconds) and seventh place in the 110 meter hurdles (17.93 seconds); and Wyatt Seal, who took fourth place in the 3200 meter run (11:17.33).

GIRLS DIVISION

Luray sophomore Kristina McLain was the only local female to earn a district title in track and field, after finishing first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.92 seconds among 10 finalists. McLain was also a district runner-up as a member of Luray’s 4×100 relay team (58.75 seconds), which also included freshman Zoe Vaughn, senior Zoe Viands, and freshman Brielle Carter.

LHS sophomore Maya Jenkins was a two-time district runner-up, finishing second in the 3200 meter run (13:58.08) and as a member of the 4×800 meter relay team. That second-placed team also included sophomore Isabela Rizek, senior Annah Wood, and senior Amalie Krammer.

Wood, who will be running for Bridgewater College in the fall, finished third in the 800 meter run (2:34.42).

Other top finishers for the Luray girls track and field team include:

  • 3rd — Lucy Currle, junior, 300 meter hudles (56.94 seconds)
  • 4th — Zoe Vaughan, freshman, 100 meter hurdles (19.96 seconds)
  • 6th — Zoe Vaughan, freshman, 100 meter dash (14.69 seconds)
  • 7th — Brielle Carter, freshman, 100 meter dash (14.79 seconds)
  • 7th — Isabela Rizek, sophomore, 800 meter run (2:38.38)

Page County’s girls track and field team had success with their throwers, as senior Mady Murphy finished as a district runner-up in discus (100′,1″), and senior Makenzie Painter took third in the shot put (26′,11″). Painter also took fifth in the discus (87′,9″), while Murphy earned sixth in the shot put (25′,10″).

Junior Maryn Cave earned firth place in the 3200 meter run (16:22.72).

Top finishers advance to the Region 2B track and field meet at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at East Rockingham High School.
