
Nine local athletes earn all-state at VHSL Class 2 Outdoor Championships

HARRISONBURG, June 7 — Nine local track and field athletes earned all-state status after posting ten Top 10 performances at the VHSL Class 2 Outdoor Track State Championships held June 6-7 at James Madison University.
BOYS DIVISION
Page County’s Braxton Pettit recorded the highest finish locally, as the sophomore was the state runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles. Pettit finished with a time of 14.74 seconds — just one-tenth of a second behind the state champion. He won both the Bull Run District (14.68) and the Region 2B title (14.76) in the event. The PCHS sophomore also finished 13th at state among 26 finalists in the 300 meter hurdles (42.42 seconds) and 15th among 35 finalist in the 100 meter dash (11.4 seconds).
Luray’s Azmani Jackson earned all-state status in TWO different events. The sophomore took third place in the 400 meter dash (50.49 seconds — just 1.48 seconds off the state champion); and seventh place in the 800 meter run (2:02.14). Jackson won the district (51.23) and the region (51.65) titles in the 400 meters.
Luray senior and Shippensburg University-commit Davey Johnson earned third place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.33 — about 3.4 seconds behind the state champ. Johnson competed in the 3200 meter run at the district and region levels, winning first and second, repsectively.
Page County junior Asher Kite finished ninth among 24 finalists in the 1600 meter run, with a time of 4:41.11. Kite also finished 18th in the 800 meter run (2:07.05).
It should also be noted that Page County senior Ace Campbell finished 13th in the 400 meter dash (53.04) and 17th in the triple jump (40-3.5); and Luray freshman Daniel Frey finished 16th in the 300 metter hurldes (42.68).
GIRLS DIVISION
Luray’s 4×800 relay team posted the top finish for female state track qualifiers locally. The team of senior Annah Wood, sophomore Isabela Rizek, sophomore Maya Jenkins and senior Amalie Krammer finished in fifth place with a time of 10:34.25 — less than 30 seconds behind the state champions.
Wood, a Bridgewater College-commit, topped all local track athletes by finishing among the Top 10 in THREE different categories at the state meet. In addition to being a member of the fifth-place 4×800 relay team, the Luray senior also placed ninth in both the 800 meter run (2:33.60) and the 1600 meter run (5:51.17).
Rizek also placed ninth in the 3200 meter run (12:54.65).
Luray sophomore Kristina McLain placed eighth in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 17.68 — 1.76 seconds behind the state champ.
