PCHS junior most prolific track athlete in Page County

~ PVN staff report

LURAY, April 28  — While our PVN “Athlete of the Week” recognition is a week or so overdue, the accomplishment and the athlete are still quite relevant. Page County High School’s Braxton Pettit is one of the top track athletes in the county…and his new school record helps solidify that fact.

On April 10 at the Page Valley Invitational in Luray, Pettit set a new school record in the 110 meter hurdles, as he won the event in 14.26 seconds. The PCHS junior has dominated in the event, winning first place at Rocktown on Saturday, April 18 (14.45 seconds) and again at the third annual Rock ‘N’ Run the Valley Invitational at East Rockingham on Friday, April 24 (14.37).

Yet, it’s not Pettit’s dominance in a single event that makes him possibly the best track athlete in the county — it’s his ability to use his speed and agility to dominate in multiple events.

During the Region 2B indoor track championships in February, Pettit amassed 38 points and earned the title of “Top Performer” at the region meet after winning four individual events — 55 meter hurdles (7.62 seconds), 55 meter dash (6.75 sec), 300 meter dash (39.97 sec) and long jump (18’6.5″). As if that wasn’t enough, he was region runner-up in the triple jump (39’1/2″).

In early March, the junior produced a state runner-up finish (7.59 sec) in the 55 meter hurdles at the VHSL Class 2 state indoor track championships — just nine one-hundreds of a second behind the state champion.

Back on April 10 when he set a new school record, Pettit was once again named “Top Performer” as he earned 44 of Page County’s 134 points to win the boys team title at the Page Valley Invitational. The track standout won three events that day — the 110 meter hurdles (14.26 sec), 100 meter dash (11.21 sec -state qualifying time) and the 300 meter hurdles (41.06 sec – state qualifying time). He also placed second in the triple jump (37′, 10″) and third in the long jump (19-0.5 feet).

The Page County High School boys track team will be traveling to Strasburg on Wednesday, April 29 and to the New Market Battlefield (Stonewall Jackson host) on Friday, May 1.
