Rondal Lee “Archie” Painter, 80, of Luray, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at his residence.
He was born on June 9, 1945, in Luray and was a son of the late Robert Lee Painter and Clarine Painter.
Archie was a Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army, having served for two years (1967-1969). He was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, Combat Infantryman (1st Award) and two Marksman (M14) Awards.
He was a team player on the Shady Grove Dodgers of the Stanley Sandlot Baseball team recognized by National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. He loved bowling, hunting mushrooms and cracking his walnuts. He worked 30-plus years as a carpenter. He was a member of the Leake’s Chapel Church of the Brethren in Stanley.
Rondal is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Griffith (Alan “Bud”) of Luray; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rondel “R.L.” Painter and Riese Painter (Amy), both of Luray; a brother, Steven Painter and wife Patsy of Luray; and his companion of 29 years, Carolyn Presgraves of Luray; two stepdaughters, Jennifer and Melissa Dodson; 12 grandchildren, Dustin Griffith, Cory Griffith, Trever Griffith, Ariel Dellinger, Logan Painter, Emily Mayle, William Mayle, Kellie Bolyard, Lauren Dodson, Olivia Bailey, Addie Bailey and Everleigh Bailey; seven great-grandchildren, Weston, McKinlee, Lexi, Aniston, Arlington, William “Bill” and Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Painter and Nelson Painter; and a sister, Mary Ann Cubbage.
A private service will be held at a later date.
