Age 71, Mechanicsville, Va.
Roy Lee Royer of Mechanicsville, Virginia passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 peacefully at his home, where he lived with his daughter Deborah (Royer) Lively and son-in-law Timothy Lively, who took care of him along with Amy Morris-Jenkins, who Roy Lee took as another daughter.
Roy Lee was born in Shenandoah on February 27, 1952 to the late Marie (Comer) Royer from Shenandoah and James Royer.
Roy Lee was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Lively of Lynchburg, Va.; his brother, Charles “Butch” Royer from Mechanicsville, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Jim McAlister from Stanley, Va., and Ray Bowles from Mechanicsville, Va.; and the love of his life, Georgia “Georgina” Royer.
Roy Lee is survived by his children, Deborah Lively (Tim), Eva Smith (Sandy “Smitty”), Scott Royer (Heather), Kyle Royer (Nasstassia), and Zackary Royer (Shannon); his grandchildren, Aerin Cochran (Richie), Joshua Thomas (Mikayla), Ardista Miller, Skylahr Miller (Steven), Cayden Miller, David Smith, Violet Woodsmith (Dawnielle), Charles Smith (Chelsea), Nathan Royer, Aubriella Royer, Anthony Gonsalves, Savannah Royer, and Levi Royer; his great grandchildren Oliver Thomas, Walker Fowler, Athena Fowler, Isaiah Fowler, Carter McNeil, Niles Cochran, Robbie Lively, Oryia Lively, Landon Smith, Sabrina Smith, and Baby Miller (due September 4, 2023); his sisters, Shirley McAlister, Edna Bowles, Violet Whorley, and Peggy Lewis; his brother, James Royer, and a sister-in-law Jewel Royer. He is also survived by his longest friend for more than 50 years Anita Miller, and his “Suga” from across the street Lisa Holinka. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends — all who loved him very much and he taught most of them how to dance, or at least tried.
Roy Lee retired from the Henrico County Parks and Recreation Department, where he drove a riding tractor for more than 20 years. He was responsible for cutting the fields at the parks and around the schools. He enjoyed it very much because he would collect baseballs, golf balls, gloves, etc. that were lost and take them to the flea market or have a yard sale.
Roy Lee loved going to the American Legion on Lakeside on Friday nights to go dancing. He would have the women lined up ready for a dance. Roy Lee also enjoyed collecting lead wheel weights and melting them down to make different kinds of fishing sinkers. He would then take them to the river on the weekends and sell them along with snacks and drinks. This is where he received his nickname from his grandkids as “Sugar Grandpa”. Whenever the grandkids would go to visit, he would load them up on snacks (sugar).
Roy’s funeral will be held at Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home, 703 Maryland Ave, Shenandoah, VA 22849 on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 11 a.m., there will be a visitation one hour before the funeral at 10 a.m.
