Year-to-date rainfall still nearly 4 inches above average

STANLEY — September was the driest month so far in 2025. Rainfall for the month was 1.53 inches, or 2.57 inches below the average of 4.10 inches. However, September had 12 days with measurable rain, while the average is nine. The total year-to-date rainfall is 35.16 inches, or 3.83 inches above average.

The driest September dates back to 1985, with only 0.32 inch of rain recorded. The wettest September was 2003, with 14.15 inches of rain thanks to the remnants of Isabel.

High temperatures for September were near average. The average mean temperature was 67.9 degrees, or 0.4 degree above the 57-year average of 67.5 degrees. The average afternoon high temperature for the month was 78.4 degrees, or 0.2 degree above the average high of 78.2 degrees.

High temperatures for September climbed into the 80s on 15 days, the 70s on 14 days and in the 60s on one day during the month. The high for the month was 86 degrees on Sept. 6.

The warmest September on record was in 1998, where the average afternoon high was 85.6 degrees with 11 days reaching the 90-degree mark or higher. The coolest September was in 2006, where the average afternoon high was only 73 degrees with no days above the 90-degree mark.

The average daily low temperature for the month was 57.3 degrees, or 0.6 degree above the average low of 56.7 degrees. Low temperatures for September were down into the 40s on three days, the 50s on 15 days and into the 60s on 14 days during the month. The low for the month was 45 degrees on Sept. 8.

The peak wind gust for the month was 34 mph on Sept. 6.

There were no records broken during the month of September.
