February 18, 1966 — Construction work on the proposed shopping center on East Main Street at the Confederate monument will begin as soon as weather conditions permit, it was stated this week by Lowell Baughan, architect.

Baughan is a son of G.L. Baughan who, with P.W. Moore, of Staunton, is building the project.

Baughan stated that it has not yet been finally determined who will occupy the shopping center, but that these negotiations are progressing satisfactorily. A residence recently purchased from D.B. Coffman will be torn down to make way for the center.

The store space will consist of 100,000 square feet, and there will be parking space for 500 cars, Baughan said.
