Still burning … years later

March 13, 1890 — In 1883, the coke house of Milnes was destroyed by fire, and strange as it may seem, the fire has never yet been extinguished, though entirely exposed to all the rain that has fallen since that date.

It seems that the fire had taken root, as it were, and was burning downward. After dark, the smoldering embers glow brightly when fanned by the breeze.
