Sting operation ends sale of illegal fireworks

May 9, 1991 — A Rockingham County couple was arrested Sunday near Luray as part of a sting operation involving illegal fireworks.

According to the Page County Sheriff ’s Department, the couple was taken into custody at the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren parking lot after an undercover officer purchased $500 in illegal fireworks.

Police seized the rest of the fireworks in the couple’s vehicle, which amounted to between $2,000 and $3,000 in value, according to police estimates.

According to the Code of Virginia, anything that leaves the ground or emits a loud bang or noise is illegal in the state.

Some of the pieces were large rockets in tubes which would shoot 200 to 300 feet in the air.
