February 6, 1964 — Vernon P. Stirewalt, 81, retired as a guide at Luray Caverns Monday, Feb. 2, 1964, where he had been employed since 1959.

It was interesting to note that Mr. Stirewalt walked over 5,000 miles underground after he was 75-years-old, showing and explaining the wonders of the Caverns to thousands of visitors.

He retired from the Navy Yard officially in 1945 and returned to Luray where he worked occasionally in the plumbing business until 1959 when he was employed as a guide at Luray Caverns.
