Too much ‘Apple Jack’

Luray museum

September 5, 1889An altercation occurred last Sunday morning between 12 and 1 o’clock at the home of Will Aleshire in Pine Grove Hollow between “Babe” Southard and James Gray, in which Gray was cut in the face, neck and arms, and was pretty badly injured.

There was an apple butter boiling at Lecher’s house, and the parties had drank pretty freely of new and spiteful “Apple Jack.”

The parties were before Justice Grayson last Wednesday.
