Five candidates vying to challenge Tim Kaine

LURAY, May 28 — Five candidates will appear on a June 18 ballot in a Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat up for grabs in the November general election. The winner of the GOP primary will face-off with Democrat incumbent Tim Kaine. In order to be eligible to vote in that primary, citizens must register no later than 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 in person, or 11:59 p.m. online.
The Constitution of Virginia requires that citizens be registered in the precinct in which they live to be qualified to vote. Those still needing to register may do so at the Page County Government Center, 103 South Court Street in Luray.
Early in-person voting in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat began May 3 and continues through June 15. Voters may cast their ballots early in person Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the bottom floor of the government center (parking in the rear of the building). Registered residents may also vote on two Saturdays, June 8 and June 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The deadline for absentee ballots by mail is Friday, June 7. An absentee ballot application may be requested by calling 540-743-3986 or complete the form online at www.elections.virginia.gov Online requests greatly reduce the time needed to obtain a ballot.
Election Day for the Republican Senate Primary will be Tuesday, June 18, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Whether voting early, or on Election Day, voters are reminded to bring proper identification to the polls.

The November ballot will include federal races, such as the U.S. Senate seat and Republican Ben Cline’s seat in the House of Representatives (against Democratic challenger Ken Mitchell), as well as the race for the Oval Office. Town elections in Luray, Shenandoah and Stanley will be the only local choices on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Tuesday, June 18 at 7 p.m. is also the deadline for local candidates to file their paperwork in local races in order to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
