Uphill battle on Tanner’s Ridge

Shenandoah National Park

May 21, 1992 — For nearly 20 years, Ed Glick has fought an uphill battle to bring asphalt to his section of Tanner’s Ridge.

Sometime today, he will learn whether he won or lost.

Glick and the 300 other families living and owning land in Skyline Lakes, on the upper end of Va. 682, await the outcome of a resolution put before the Commonwealth Transportation Board.

In essence, the motion would halt construction on 18 low-level roads bordering the Shenandoah National Park.

Glick has lived on Tanner’s Ridge, southeast of Stanley, since 1983. In that time, he has seen the first 2.8 miles of the road paved. The last .9 mile remains unpaved, rock-strewn and dangerous.

It also remains inaccessible for fire and rescue vehicles, Glick says.
