~ Athlete of the Week selected by the publisher
Luray High School’s Emilee Weakley has been named an All-State athlete in her second sport nearly a month after receiving her diploma. The Virginia High School League announced last week that Weakley was among the first team selections on the 2022 Class 2 All-State girls soccer team.
Weakley lead the Bulldogs to a historic 18-4 season that included Luray’s first Region B title and its first appearance in the state tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Bruton, 8-0, at home in the state quarterfinal before falling, 5-1, to eventual state champion Glenvar in a June 10 semifinal in Salem. Not only did Weakley finish her high school career among the state’s all-time leading scorers in girls basketball (top five), the two-sport athlete finished her soccer career with 65 goals this season (tied for 5th in the VHSL record book…the record is 88) and 138 goals for her career (11th highest all-time…the record is 215).
Weakley was also named the Bull Run District and Region B “Player of the Year” in girls soccer. This winter the senior won the same honors for a third-straight year in basketball, including Class 2 State Player of the Year for a second-straight time — that’s a total of 10 Player of the Year honors over two sports in three years.
