July 9, 1987 — Benny McCrary has set quite a few records. He has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records since 1968 as one of the world’s largest twins, has captured five professional wrestling championship belts and has been on national television talk shows with Phil Donahue, Merv Griffin and David Frost.

McCrary, who is appearing this week at the Luray Firemen’s Carnival, said Tuesday that there’s another record he is trying to set. He wants to break the Guinness record for losing the most weight.

In 1979, McCrary weighed 814 pounds. Today he’s at 398 and still taking off the pounds. McCrary said he needs to lose 200 pounds more to best the current record of 546 pounds. He hopes to lose the weight by next year.
