SHENANDOAH, May 21 — The Page County Panthers captured their 14th consecutive win in a 2-0 duel on Tuesday with fourth-seeded Clarke in the semifinal round of the Bull Run District tournament. The top-seeded Panthers got a solo home run from sophomore Kahlei Shifflett and a successful slide into home by sophomore Addyson Wyant to produce the game’s only runs in the fourth inning.

Division II Coker College-commit Bailee Gaskins had a perfect game going into the sixth inning until Clarke’s Jenna Hindman broke it up by leading off with a single. Freshman Emmerson Kennedy would also record a single in the sixth, but it would be the Eagles only hits of the day. In seven innings in the circle, Gaskins struck out 14 of the 23 batters she faced. The senior hurled a two-hit shutout and gave up no walks in a complete game effort. At one point in the game, Gaskins retired 10 consecutive batters — and 12 of 13 — by way of the “K”.

The Panthers recorded seven of the game’s nine hits, with sophomore Aliyah Knight leading the way going 2-for-3. Shifflett went 1-for-3 with the game-breaking solo home run to lead off the fourth and recorded the game’s only RBI.

In the low-scoring pitcher’s duel, Clarke senior Anna Hornbaker made a solid showing in the circle — only giving up one earned run while striking out seven in six innings. Neither pitcher gave up a walk. Clarke committed the game’s only error in the fourth.

While the Eagles only threatened to score once in the sixth and stranded two runners, the Panthers left six on base during the game.

No. 1 Page County (19-1) will now host No. 2 Strasburg (18-4) at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Alan Knight Field for the Bull Run District tournament championship.

Quarterfinal round action of the Region 2B tournament begins on Memorial Day – Monday, May 27 – with Clarke (12-10) traveling to Riverheads (10-6) for a 1 p.m. matchup, and Page County hosting Fort Defiance (7-13) at 6 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Luray Bulldogs baseball team (10-10) pulled off an upset of No. 1 Madison (11-10) on the road Tuesday in a Bull Run District tournament semifinal. Luray won 10-2 and advance to the Bull Run championship at 6 p.m. on Thursday at No. 2 Strasburg (13-8). The Bulldogs are also scheduled to travel Monday for a Region 2B quarterfinal (opponent TBD) at 1 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Luray girls soccer team fell, 10-2, against No. 1 Clarke on the road in Tuesday’s district semifinal. The Bulldogs (11-7) will now host an early 11 a.m. matchup on Monday, May 27 with Stuarts Draft in the quarterfinal round of the Region 2B tournament.

The Page County boys soccer team (5-12) lost their district semifinal match with Madison on Tuesday, but they will continue play on Monday in a Region 2B quarterfinal at Clarke (14-2-1) at 1 p.m.
