July 1, 1965 — Doris Ann Turner, 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Denver Lee Turner of Stanley, accidentally shot herself in the knee Saturday morning of last week while sitting in her grandfather’s car on Main Street in Luray. She was treated for the wound at Page Memorial Hospital and released.

The accident occurred after the child’s grandfather, James Knight, had left the car to enter a store. Deputy Sheriff L. Wayne Strickler, who investigated the accident, said the little girl removed the keys from the ignition switch, unlocked the glove compartment and took a .22 caliber pistol from the compartment and shot herself.

The bullet passed through the fleshy part of her right knee. Luckily no bones were struck.
