• Why are you running for public office?
To make a difference. Page County is where my family and I have chosen to place roots and it is important to me to create positive impacts for my community when and where I can through participating in community events, volunteer efforts, financial support or this new venture to be involved in our local school board. I truly believe there is a season for everything and now that my children are a little older and our family is in a place to allow me, as a working mom to give time to a public office, I am excited at the opportunity to do so. My running is also driven from my recent appointment to the school board that has given me the chance to get a brief glimpse behind the scenes and see what areas of strengths and areas of opportunities exist, leading me to be confident that I bring experience and skill sets that will support the needs of this public office.
• What makes you the best candidate for Page County School Board’s District 2 seat?
I believe I am the best candidate for the District 2 School Board member office for a few reasons. First, I have children in our school system which I believe is important as my family and I experience the day-to-day life of a family working within the Page County School system to ensure our children are well educated and have a solid foundation to be successful in life. Seeing first hand what children in the PCPS system go through and working with my children’s teachers and school staff allow me a unique perspective and voice that will be a support to the existing school board members. Second, I bring business leadership experience that covers process efficiency, accountability and financial acumen — all I believe are necessary in our current PCPS state. I’ve led teams across multiple countries giving me experience that works with various viewpoints and backgrounds to find the best combined long-term outcomes which I believe is necessary to appropriately represent my District 2 community.
• What is the most pressing issue facing Page County Public Schools and how would you address it?
This is a tough question as we, as a Page County community, have multiple pressing challenges facing our school system and community as a whole. When focusing on the schools directly, I believe the budget is our biggest challenge. The difficult thing with budget challenges in a public school system is that it is funded by the state and local taxpayers creating a direct impact of budget pressures on the community members. There are multiple ways to address this in my opinion, all of which involve joint decisions — joint among the school leadership, community leaders such as the Board of Supervisors and community members directly. We have heard a lot about short-term rentals lately and in my opinion, there are direct impacts from our local homes being used as STRs instead of long-term homes for locals because STRs do not have children attending our local schools meaning there is not tax revenue from those homes directly going to the PCPS budget. In addition, I believe there are expenses in our current PCPS budget that may be able to be decreased or allocated differently to have better and more direct impact for our students and educators. Consistent and clear discussions with our community, the Board of Supervisors and Central Office along with accountability partnership is how I believe these will be best addressed.
• What is the best thing about Page County Public Schools and how would you maintain or improve it?
This is an easy one! Our educators and PCPS staff are the best thing for our school system! If you walk around the schools or even out in the community you can hear the love and admiration parents and students have for our PCPS staff. These educators and staff that come to work every day with a smile on their face and the desire to support our community children is what makes PCPS stand out. I will do my best to maintain these amazing staff by making sure they feel appreciated, know the impact that they make on each child and support them in the best ways I can through any ask they may have.
• Briefly describe a decision you have made in a leadership role and tell why you made that decision.
I recently left a job I loved, a leadership role with amazing team members and colleagues along with tenure of almost 13 years. This was not easy, it was a big change and created an immediate unknown (which in it’s own is uneasy) to move into a new role with a new company. However the decision was made because I did not agree with the direction I saw my prior company moving in. This may not be the story expected with this question, but I bring it up because I will stand with what I believe even in the difficult times. I am open minded to hear various sides of a situation and will always ask for the details because making rash or uneducated decisions benefits no one in my opinion, but once I feel confident, with facts, I will stand for what I believe is right even if it isn’t always the easy path.
