H.L. Mencken, a.k.a. the Sage of Baltimore, was a writer and author. He often wrote commentary about social issues, and of course politics.
On July 26, 1920 he penned a piece that is rather prophetic. Almost a century ago, he wrote in part:
“On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”
A friend of mine recently brought Mencken’s piece to my attention and mused that, it’s surely a strong contender for the best political prediction of all time.
I reckon he’s right.
