Dear Editor,
Friends of the Shenandoah River (FOSR) analyzed a water sample for E. coli that was collected from Hawksbill Creek in early October. The results indicated that E. coli levels were 1,046 cfu/L which is more than four times the US EPA recommended recreational threshold.
The Hawksbill Creek testing site is the only FOSR Summer E. coli testing location that consistently exceeded the threshold throughout the season. Unless action is taken, it will just be more of the same.
As part of their Summer E. coli FOSR has been providing weekly E. coli level reports at public access sites on the North Fork, South Fork, and Main-stem of the Shenandoah River.
For more information visit FOSR’s website: https://fosr.org/state-of-the-river/e-coli-testing-project/ or the FOSR Facebook page.
