LURAY, July 8 — The Luray Rotary Club held its 50th annual golf tournament on July 8 at the Caverns Country Club. The non-profit civic organization raised $50,000 to support the community through scholarships and other projects.
“Our hearts are full of gratitude as we celebrate the tremendous success of this milestone event. Thanks to the generosity, dedication, and teamwork of so many, we reached our goal of raising $50,000 to support our community!” reads a statement on the club’s social media.
“A very special shout-out goes to Brian Phelps, Caleb Routhier, and Jim Watkins. Your leadership, countless hours of planning, and unwavering commitment ensured this special 50th Anniversary Tournament went off without a hitch. Because of your efforts—and the support of so many others—this was truly our best tournament yet!” the social media statement continues.
The 31 four-person teams that entered the Captain’s Choice tournament were offered a $50,000 prize for a hole-in-one on No. 4. Although there were no winners, the fundraising event also offered $50 gift certificates for the longest drive and closest to the pin, as well as cash prizes for the top four flights at $400 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third place.
One hundred percent of net funds raised are donated to local education programs and charities, and not used for Rotay Club bills. Last year’s tournament enabled $20,000 of donations to benefit the following:
- Laurel Ridge Scholarships
- LHS Scholarships
- PCHS Scholarships
- Page Alliance for Community Action
- Page One
- Page Public Library
- Page Free Clinic
- Seniors First
- West Luray Rec Center
The $100 fee bought golfers a round of 18 with a cart, two mulligans, one “sandie”, light breakfast, BBQ lunch by Carol’s Country Cookin’ and door prizes.
“Thank you to everyone who helped make this golden anniversary tournament such an unforgettable success,” the club’s social media states. “Together, we’re making a lasting difference in our community, and we couldn’t do it without each and every one of you.”
