Mama bear’s bluff

Luray-Cave Hill

June 26, 1986A group of hikers and a Shenandoah National Park ranger were charged by a bear in the Stony Man region of the Park on Sunday, noted chief ranger Larry Hakel.

No one was injured.

According to Hakel, the 200-pound black female had two cubs with her and made “bluff charges” in an attempt to frighten the people away from them.

“It’s just something the mother naturally does when she feels her cubs are threatened,”said Hakel.

The area around Stony Man has been closed to all camping and hiking, pending capture and tagging of the bear,” Hakel added.
