July 17, 1958 — The concrete lining of the Mary’s Rock Tunnel, one-half mile south of the intersection of U.S. Highway 211 and the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, will necessitate the closing of the tunnel during night construction, according to Park Superintendent Guy D. Edwards. Construction of this $201,627 contract is being done by Lewis Construction Associates of Goldsboro, N.C., and is part of the National Park Service’s Mission 66 program which proposes adequate development and conservation of all National Park System areas by 1966 to meet the needs of constantly increased number of visitors.
